• The first concert of the 2025 Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival takes place in Brandon on Wednesday. Alexander Tselyakov, on piano, celebrates 150 years of Maurice Ravel, with a varied program of the great French composer’s masterpieces. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door for general admission. • Our Journey, a celebration recognizing First Nation, Métis and Inuit student achievement in education, is coming up on Friday at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Brandon University and Assiniboine College graduates will be among those honoured through ceremony and tradition. There will be a barbecue during the day and feast in the evening for friends and family, as well as entertainment and an opportunity to share in one another’s accomplishments. Please bring your own chair.
• This year’s Convocation ceremonies will include a pair of performances by honorary degree recipients. CBC host Tom Allen will present his chamber musical, “JS Bach’s Long Walk in the Snow,” on May 28 at 7:30 p.m., at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. On May 29, Swedish Soprano Elin Rombo will perform, accompanied by pianist Sharon Rogers. That concert begins at 8 p.m., at the Lorne Watson. Email McMasterT@BrandonU.ca for tickets to those events. Convocation takes place on May 29 and 30, with two ceremonies each day.

The Winnipeg Convention Centre, occupying an entire downtown block, has its official opening this weekend after the scheduled opening in 1974 was delayed by labour problems.

• Another academic year has begun at Brandon University. Orientation for new students is taking place today, with classes beginning on Wednesday. Orientation will be the start of a two-week series of welcoming events, leading into the BU 125 Homecoming, from Sept. 12-15. Highlights of Homecoming will include the BU 125 birthday celebration, the Blue & Gold Social, a free talk on rural health care by physician and CBC host Brian Goldman, research presentations and the Homecoming Dinner and Awards. • “A Warrior’s Red Road,” a BU photo-voice project focused on Indigenous men connecting to their culture will go on exhibition in Winnipeg this week after a successful launch in Brandon last year. The show will be on exhibition at the Graffiti Gallery in Winnipeg beginning on Thursday and continuing until Oct. 25. An opening reception will take place on Thursday from 7 until 10 p.m. at the Graffiti Gallery.
• The Bobcats soccer teams kick off their Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference this weekend by hosting Providence University College on Saturday. The men’s match begins at 1 p.m., at the Healthy Living Centre, followed by the women’s contest at 3:15 p.m. The Bobcats will visit Saint-Boniface on Sunday.

The Hartney Home Economics Club held its annual achievement night recently with 28 girls taking part.
The Brandon Rock and Gem Club will be the new name of the Gem-Dandy Rock club, it was announced at a recent meeting.
The annual invasion of Brandon will begin June 29 when the 82nd Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba opens. About 87,000 people saw last year’s show.
