• 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — The United Way of Brandon & District hosts Brandon’s Largest Garage Sale — Fall Edition at the Keystone Centre. Admission to attend is $3 with children 12 and under free.
• 10 a.m. — Spruce Woods Provincial Park Interpretation Programs: Spirit Sands guided tours. Join a Park Interpreter for a three-kilometre hike to the iconic sand dunes and discover the diverse ecosystems, flora and fauna of this area. • 11 a.m. — Recovery Day Brandon 2024 takes place at the Riverbank Discovery Centre’s Fusion Stage. Elders open with knowledge sharing and prayer ties at 11 a.m.; City of Brandon will kick off the free community barbecue at 11:30 p.m. At noon, various speakers will share their stories of inspiration and hope of recovery from many challenges. MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (CATPM) (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — In honour of the RCAF’s 100th anniversary, the CATPM, Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War, has switched to summer hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week at the Brandon Municipal Airport. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War-vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. RCAF members who lost their lives during the Second World War are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Memorial wall.
• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, this was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). • Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — We opened our new temporary exhibit, marking the 110th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The main features of the exhibit include a trench wall, First World War artillery and two machine gun pits. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first since 1907. The AGSM boasts two exhibition spaces, an art school and a gift shop that supports more than 60 local Manitoba artists. Fall 2024 art classes for adults and youth are available for registration. An opening reception will be held for “Sunke Sapa Hdeshka,” a retrospective exhibition of work by the late Elvis Antoine on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. Exhibition runs until Nov. 30 in the Main Gallery. “Me, I Think,” with Manitoba artist and author Craig Russell, is a series of nearly 100 selfies taken outside the vernacular of social media and will be on display in the Kayes Community Gallery until Nov. 7. Fall hours: Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday noon to 5 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday. Entry inside The Town Centre parkade. No admission fee. • Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. • Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — Museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware and lumber merchant and prominent citizen in the community. The main house depicts how a family in the Victorian era would have lived. There are also two additional annexes and a coach house available for viewing. Currently closed for the season. • Oct. 1 — Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium 55th Anniversary Fundraiser Gala, which will be followed by our “2024-2025 WMCA Presents” Season Announcement and a concert by a favourite local band with some historic ties to the WMCA. • Oct. 5 — The Souris Glenwood Community Centre is hosting a Five Mile Feast fall fundraiser at the King Edward Room of the Souris Hotel.
