Olympic champion Odermatt back on top with Alta Badia GS win

The Associated Press 3 minute read Monday, Dec. 19, 2022

LA VILLA, Italy (AP) — There was no stopping Marco Odermatt this time.

A day after an uncharacteristic third-place finish on the same course, the Olympic champion won another giant slalom in Alta Badia on Monday for his 15th career World Cup victory.

Odermatt, the reigning overall World Cup champion and current leader, maintained his first-run advantage during a wild second run down the Gran Risa, making a series of recoveries after getting bounced off the racing line several times.

The Swiss skier finished 0.20 seconds ahead of Norwegian veteran Henrik Kristoffersen and 0.92 ahead of Olympic silver medalist Zan Kranjec.

Max Miller, The Associated Press 4 minute read Monday, Dec. 19, 2022

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Elias Lindholm scored two goals 19 seconds apart in the first minute of the third period, and the Calgary Flames beat the San Jose Sharks 5-2 Sunday night.

Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist, and Milan Lucic and Dillon Dube also scored for the Flames, who had lost five straight. Jacob Markstrom had 23 saves for his ninth win in the opener of a rare two-game series between the clubs in San Jose.

Tomas Hertl had a goal and an assist, and Timo Meier also scored for the Sharks, who lost their second straight and fell to 3-6-3 in their last 12. Kaapo Kahkonen finished with 20 saves.

Jonathan Huberdeau, appearing in his 700th career game, made a nice cross-ice pass to Lindholm, who had a wide-open net for a power-play goal 16 seconds into the third to give the Flames a 3-1 lead. Less than 20 seconds later, Lindholm got a pass from Rasmus Andersson in the left circle and beat Kahkonen for his 11th of the season to give Calgary a three-goal lead.

SEATTLE (AP) — Jared McCann scored the late game-winner to give the Seattle Kraken a 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday night.

Jordan Eberle and Ryan Donato also scored for the Kraken, and Philipp Grubauer stopped 15 shots, with both Winnipeg goals coming on the power play.

The Kraken snapped a two-game losing skid and won for just the second time in seven games.

“Just a bit more grit. I think we kind of lost that the last couple of games,” McCann said. “We haven’t played with that jam, that relentlessness, and I feel like we had that tonight.”

Poole’s career night lifts Curry-less Warriors past Raptors 126-110

Tim Wharnsby, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022

TORONTO - After a fifth consecutive loss and eighth in 10 outings, Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet lamented the team's slide is unacceptable.

Jordan Poole poured in a career-high 43 points as the Stephen Curry-less Golden State Warriors defeated the Raptors 126-110 on Sunday at Scotiabank Arena.

"This is a terrible stretch," VanVleet said. "You don't want this. You don't expect this, and you can't accept this. It's where we are. There's a lot of basketball left to be played, and there's a lot of time to fix it."

VanVleet pointed to last season when the Raptors were mired in a similar slump.

VUOKATTI, Finland - Canada's Natalie Wilkie closed out a successful season-opening Para-Nordic World Cup with her fifth medal of the week.

She was one of four Canadians to earn a medal on Sunday. Mark Arendz, Brittany Hudak and Christina Picton also made it to the podium in the 7.5-kilometre biathlon events to cap off a medal haul of 22 for Canada.

Wilkie, of Salmon Arm, B.C., struck gold with a time of 24:21.1 in the women’s standing category for her second biathlon medal of the week.

"This race was a highlight for me this week. I shot clean and won the gold medal,” said Wilkie, a seven-time Paralympic medallist. “I’ve struggled to shoot quickly in the range, so my focus today was on skiing hard right off the start to try and make up time.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov came to the rink dressed like an elf at the request of teammate Ryan Reaves, with a fuzzy green-and-red hat that stayed on his head for the Christmas-themed warmups.

Minnesota's star forward kept the fun going all game with his one-of-a-kind skills.

Kaprizov had a goal and two assists for the Wild, who held on to beat the Ottawa Senators 4-2 on Sunday afternoon for their fifth straight win.

“Every practice he’s trying new things, and just the chemistry he has with the guys and the vision he has is like none other I’ve seen,” captain Jared Spurgeon said. "I think it all starts with just how hard he works and the passion he has for the game.”

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — Kaillie Humphries learned to drive at Mount Van Hoevenberg. And she clearly hasn’t forgotten how.

Humphries teamed with fellow U.S. Olympian Kaysha Love on Sunday to win a women’s World Cup bobsled race. It was her 29th career World Cup win in the two-person event; of those, six have come in Lake Placid, more than any other track.

Humphries finished two runs in 1 minute, 54.93 seconds. It was Love’s second World Cup victory and her first appearance on the circuit this season; she is beginning the transition from push athlete to driver.

Germany got silver and bronze in the women’s race. Laura Nolte and Lena Neunecker were second in 1:55.05, while Kim Kalicki and Anabel Galander took third in 1:55.52. Bianca Ribi of Calgary and Niamh Haughey of Whitby, Ont., were fourth in 1:55.86.

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin's first speed race weekend of the women's World Cup season went so well, she believes it might make her even faster in her core technical events, too.

The four-time overall champion won a super-G Sunday to top off her weekend with career win No. 77.

The result leaves the American skier five wins short of the women’s record set by her former teammate Lindsey Vonn.

Shiffrin finished sixth and fourth, respectively, in two downhills over the past two days before excelling in the super-G format, despite having hardly trained those disciplines recently.

LUSAIL, Qatar (AP) — Lionel Messi, wearing a black Qatari robe over his blue-and-white Argentina shirt, kissed the World Cup, shuffled toward his teammates and hoisted the golden trophy high in the air.

It was an iconic sight that finally — definitively — places the soccer superstar in the pantheon of the game’s greatest players.

Messi’s once-in-a-generation career is complete: He is a World Cup champion.

In probably the wildest final in the tournament's 92-year history, Argentina won its third World Cup title by beating France 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw featuring two goals from the 35-year-old Messi and a hat trick by his heir apparent, France forward Kylian Mbappé.
