TODAY
• 10:15 to 11 a.m. — Story and Song Circle with Michelle at the Brandon Public Library. Preschoolers can join Michelle for stories, songs and crafts. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.
• 11 a.m. — The Brandon Chamber of Commerce invites you to the State of the Province Luncheon in the UCT Hall at the Keystone Centre until 1 p.m. Chamber member regular prices are $45 (plus GST). General public $50 (plus GST). A momentous occasion awaits us as we welcome Premier Wab Kinew to deliver his inaugural State of the Province address to our Chamber of Commerce membership.
• 1:30 p.m. — Assiniboine and the Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples Council will lead the Walk to End Violence at Princess Park as part of the Moose Hide Campaign. Come out and join us.
• 5:30 p.m. — The Veterans and First Responders Appreciation Banquet will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall (Wellington Street West) in Virden. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; banquet at 6 p.m. This event is open to all Canadian Forces, Allied Forces and RCMP veterans in Virden and surrounding areas. (Sorry, not open to the general public). You do not need to be a Legion member to attend. This is open to all first responders that serve Virden (note this includes firefighters in Fire Stations 1 and 2 (WDFD). • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market at The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave.). Baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.
• 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. — The Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium (205 20th St.) presents Looking Glass Theatre’s “Padre X,” a true story of Canadian Second World War Capt. John Weir Foote, the only chaplain to win the Victoria Cross — a story that, until now, has never been told. Shows at 1 p.m. which also features a talk with the award-winning Canadian playwright, Marc A. Moir, after the show, and 7:30 p.m. Doors open one hour prior to event. • 11 a.m. — Team Onix Angel is proud to announce its first Brain Tumour Walk at the Riverbank Discovery Centre until 2 p.m. There will be costume guest and entertainment, bouncy castle, barbecue fundraiser and a 2.5-kilometre walk around the Discovery Centre grounds.
• 10 a.m. — St. Jude’s Church on Main Street in Erickson will be hosting a perogie sale and garage sale until 2 p.m.
• 10 a.m. — As part of the Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve’s “At the Farm Gate” Spring Market will take place at the Onanole Recreation Centre (386 Central Rd.) until 3 p.m. with regional and local goods, arts, farm produce and baked goods. Free admission.
• 1 p.m. — The City of Brandon Parks and Recreation presents The Great Brandon Mystery Second Edition. This is a competitive mystery-solving program for adults. Inspired by Explorer’s Club, teams of two to five will race against time to solve one of Brandon’s greatest mysteries. Participants will be required to travel around solving challenging clues and puzzles and even completing challenges. The first team to solve the mystery will receive a prize. • 11 a.m. — Watoto, a Christ-centred ministry in Uganda, East Africa, brings the Watoto Children’s Choir to Calvary Temple (620 34th St.). the choir will take you on an emotional journey as the children sing, dance and share their personal stories of restoration and hope.
• 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. — Circus Genoa will take place at the Tundra Oil and Gas Place (295 Third Ave. South, Virden). Featuring our fearless daredevil in the Globe of Death, a gigantic robot transforming before your eyes, amazing acrobats as well as jugglers, clowns and other performers. The walk starts at 7 p.m., and we will meet at the Aberdeen Avenue entrance to the cemetery. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera if you have them. No signup is required for this event, but there will be a waiver to sign.

• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — In honour of RCAF’s 100th anniversary, the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War, has switched to summer hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week at the Brandon Municipal Airport. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War-vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. RCAF who lost their lives during the Second World War are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Memorial wall.
• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Currently on exhibit is “The Sound of History: Band and Musicians of Western Manitoba” until Sept. 7. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). • Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Our Second World War vehicle exhibit includes eight military vehicles used by Canadians during the Second World War. Military vehicles provided firepower, logistical support, mobility and protection for the Canadian Army, enhancing their effectiveness during the Second World War. • Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. • May 23 — Help us ring in Wedding Bells: Celebrating 20 Years of Marriage with a Manitoba tradition … the wedding social fundraiser at Bailey’s Café, located on the Brandon University grounds in the old SUDS location at 9 p.m. This is an 18+ event and will feature dancing, drag show with Brandon’s House of Hex, special guest speakers, a 50/50 and raffle prizes. Proceeds will all go toward our Pride Week events happening from June 9-15. Early bird tickets are $10 and available at Smitten until May 23. Tickets at the door will be $15.
• May 23 — Westman Youth For Christ presents Be Bold Art Exhibition and fundraising sale will take place at the Firehall Event Venue (637 Princess Ave.) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Food and drinks provided by Joe Beeverz. • May 24-26 — The ninth annual Chamber Fair takes place at the Beautiful Plains Agricultural Society grounds in Neepawa. The annual fair has midway rides, car show, food trucks, games, pony rides and more. May 24 from 4 to 10 p.m.; May 25 from noon to 10 p.m. and May 26 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. • May 25 — Duo526 Sonata Seminar 2024 final performance featuring violin and piano duos and performing works from the standard sonata repertoire at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. No admission fee.
• May 25 — For the third consecutive year, Professional Bull Riders, Canada’s elite Cup Series, makes its way to Brandon, holding the PBR Brandon Chute Out in Westoba Place at the Keystone Centre at 7 p.m. Tickets available at Ticketmaster.ca and at the box office.
• May 25 — The City of Brandon Parks and Recreation is offering a Disc Golf tournament Queen Elizabeth Park (200 26th St. North) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This tournament is for 12+ and for players of all skill levels even if you have never played. This is a great way to try the sport. Option for registration to include a set of beginner discs to use during the event. No other discs required. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each division. • May 26 — The Westman Dreams for Kids Children’s Country Fair is back for another year at the Keystone Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a free family event that includes a petting zoo, inflatables, crafts, games, sports, cookie decorating and more.
• May 26 — The YMCA Strong Kids Run is an unique race held in downtown Brandon on the last Sunday in May. It features four different timed events: 5K, 10K, 15K and 20K as well as a 1K Family Fun Run, 5K walk and 10K walk. • May 27 — We have a new murder to solve in The Dock on Princess’ “It’s Serial: Murder Mystery” event. • May 28 — Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op Inc. in partnership with Prairie Mountain Health Healthy Together Now announce the first Wellness Day at Seniors for Seniors (311 Park Ave. East) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are excited to host community groups including Prairie Mountain Health, Brandon University Healthy Living Centre, Hear Canada, the Alzheimer Society, Brandon Mobility, Westman Hospice and the Reflexology Association of Canada bringing you information about their programs. We will also be having a nutrition demonstration where you can try out some delicious healthy foods. This is a free event for the senior community in the Westman and surrounding areas. • May 29 — City of Brandon Parks and Recreation Services are hosting a Roller Disco at the Sportsplex Arena from 7 to 9 p.m. Skate rentals are available courtesy of the Wheat City Roller Derby League. Pre-booking of the skates opens at noon on May 29. Limited quantity and sizes available and can be reserved for a maximum of 50 minutes. Admissions to be paid at the front desk. • May 31 — Prairie Blend and Women In Harmony will be joining forces for a concert “Lead with Love” at Knox United Church at 7:30 p.m. Come to hear these two dynamic groups share their love for music. Admission is $10 at the door.
• May 31 — The Summer Concert Series at Poor Michael’s Bookshop (322 Highway 10, Onanole) kicks off with entertainment by Sahara Jane and Ken Shorley on the Patio. Sahara Jane is a multi-faceted musician blending influences from Afghan, Indian and Canadian musical styles in a unique and uplifting way. Tickets are $25 in advance. This Outdoor Council of Canada and Paddle Canada combination course of Field Leader (Hike and Paddle) and Intro Tandem Canoe Skills, is designed to help outdoor leaders gain foundational canoe skills and group management training. Successful students will be able to take a formal leadership role in the planning and execution of a recreational tandem canoe day trip. Ideal for wilderness guides, outdoor educators and summer camp staff. May 31 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; June 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; June 2 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Must be 18+ and have a fair amount of outdoor experience in both hiking and canoeing.
