TODAY

• Day — Join us at the Brandon Curling Club (1175 18th St.) for the 55+ Manitoba Games curling event. This event includes ice and stick curling. Also at Active Aging in Manitoba, we are proud to host the largest multi-sport event in Manitoba for those aged 55+ — the Manitoba 55+ Summer Games taking place June 18-20. • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market at The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave.). Baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 8 a.m. — The Brandon Light Horse and Pony Society is hosting a horse-jumping show over the weekend indoors at the Brandon Agriculture Centre of Excellence at the Keystone Centre from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. No admission fee.

• 1 p.m. — The Affirming ministries of Trinity and Knox United Church invite you to join them for a special community wide celebration of PIE Day In The Public Square with comedian Lara Rae, former artistic director of The Winnipeg Comedy Festival and proud transgender woman. PIE Day is a time to recognize people and programs in The United Church of Canada and beyond that are Public, Intentional and Explicit in celebrating, educating and creating awareness of 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion. • 2:30 p.m. — Join us for a Brandon University faculty recital to kick off this year’s Clarinetfest. The BU faculty recital featuring Cathy Wood, clarinet; Kerry Du Wors, violin; Madeline Hildebrand, piano, performing works of David Braid will take place at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. All are welcome. No admission fee.

• 7:30 p.m. — Brandon University School of Music presents pro series: James Campbell, clarinet, and Futaba Niekawa, piano, will perform at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. James Campbell has been called “Canada’s pre-eminent clarinetist and wind soloist” by the Toronto Star. Japanese pianist Futaba Niekawa, known for her verve and sensitivity, pushes the boundaries of her artistry as a soloist and collaborative pianist across genres and disciplines. Tickets are available at the door: $20 for adults and students. BU students and Conservatory of Music students are free.

SUNDAY

• 8 a.m. — The Brandon Light Horse and Pony Society is hosting a horse-jumping show indoors at the Brandon Agriculture Centre of Excellence at the Keystone Centre from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. No admission fee.

• 10 a.m. — Justice Relic Snowmobile Derby takes place today with hands drawn 10 a.m. to noon. Cost is $20 a hand and includes a hot meal. Begins at the Justice Community Centre grounds. All proceed go toward the Justice Community Club.

• 2:30 p.m. — Explore the natural beauty of the Assiniboine Food Forest’s environment during a nature walk. Stop at Crow’s General Store for some hot coffee, hot chocolate or ice cream afterwards. Meet at Crow’s (33 17th St. East). Walks are scheduled every Sunday afternoon until late March.

• 2 p.m. — Westman Jams meets at Eastside Eatery from 2 to 4 p.m. Join the Jam and play, sing, listen or dance. Have some fun and help us raise money for the Reg Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, which financially assists local students attend the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden.

• 3:30 p.m. — Brandon University School of Music presents Clarinetfest 2024 concert featuring James Campbell and Michelle Anderson, BU Clarinet Choir, University of Regina Clarinet Choir and the Festival Clarinet Choir. Event takes place in the Kinsmen Hall, Room 1-20 at the School of Music. All are welcome. No admission charge.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Bingo takes place every Monday at 205 College Ave. Doors open at 4 p.m. with early bird start at 6:30 p.m. and regular games at 7:10 p.m. Canteen available. Proceeds stay in Brandon for needs in the community. Come enjoy a fun evening at minimal cost.

WEDNESDAY

• 10 a.m. — The Brandon Festival of the Arts takes place until March 15 at various locations throughout the city of Brandon and showcases and promotes the development of the performing arts community in Brandon and the surrounding area. • 10:15 a.m. — Drop in to the Brandon Shoppers Mall Library Branch for Wiggly Wednesday, a story time program for children ages 0-5. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Join members of the Brandon Scrabble Club for an afternoon of Scrabble, coffee and laughs at the Brandon Public Library. Scrabble boards are provided, and all levels of skill are welcome to attend. No registration is required.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Presently the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum is closed, but the Canteen Building is available for rent year-round, and you can shop the Tiger Moth Gift Shop by appointment by calling 204-727-2444. The museum will reopen on April 1, weather permitting. The museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial is open to the public from sunrise to sundown.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). • Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Our Second World War vehicle exhibit includes eight military vehicles used by Canadians during the Second World War. Military vehicles provided firepower, logistical support, mobility and protection for the Canadian Army, enhancing their effectiveness during the Second World War. • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first, the AGSM boasts two art galleries, studios for youth and adult classes, a gift shop that supports more than 90 Manitoban artists and artisans. • Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. • March 16 — The Oak Lake and Area Lions Club invites you to A Night at the Races at the Oak Lake Community Hall for a fun-filled evening of pre-recorded horse racing and light horse betting. • March 16 — The Brandon Scout Group is hosting a regional Kubkar Rally at École New Era School gymnasium (527 Louise Ave.) from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Area Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will be racing their self-made vehicles to compete for first place and best design. • March 21 — The Assiniboine Community College Foundation Gala Dinner will be held in the historic Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts building in the North Hill campus. Proceeds of this event go toward new student awards for Women in our Public Safety Advanced Diploma program, which prepares graduates to become a superior candidate in a highly competitive recruiting process for police or other public safety agencies. • March 23 — Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association’s Son of a Beach 2024 volleyball tournament takes place Triple Crown Sports (3500 McDonald Ave.) at 10 a.m. with an after-party at the Eagle’s Nest Bar and Grill. • March 24 — “Reveen: The Legend Continues,” takes place at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The most popular show in the history of Canadian theatre is back starring Ty Reveen. Tickets are available at the WMCA box office or by calling 204-728-9510.

• March 24 — The Brandon Festival of the Arts Encore Concert takes place at Lorne Watson Recital Hall at School of Music, Brandon University at 7 p.m. Competition for the Kaye and G. R. Rowe, Memorial Scholarships, one performer from each festival discipline.

• March 25-30 — The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, held annually during Manitoba’s March spring break, is a tourism highlight in Western Canada. The RMWF is one of Western Canada’s largest agricultural events and the largest annual event to be held in Brandon and only one of two fairs in Canada to receive Royal designation from Queen Elizabeth II. At the fair, you can expect to see world-class show jumping, heavy horse competitions, livestock sales and displays, a quality hands-on agriculture education program, live entertainers, more than 300 commercial and agricultural exhibits and much more.
