BOYS
BRANDON WHEAT KINGS
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The first-place Wheat Kings (23-2-1) earned three points in a pair of hard-fought games against the sixth-place Chiefs (13-10-5) in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League over the weekend.
On Saturday at J&G Homes Arena, Brandon received goals from six different players in a 6-3 victory over Yellowhead, but the Chiefs certainly didn’t make it easy.
Bryce Bryant and Max Collyer gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in thee first period, but Keenan Skrupa and Jaxon Jacobson tied it up in the second period.
Cole Slobodian gave Brandon its first lead in the third period but DJ Meloney tied at 3-3 with 11 minutes remaining. That’s when Ekam Dhaliwal and Cole Temple sniped 41 seconds apart and Nash Henwood added an empty netter for the Brandon victory.
KC Couckuyt made 19 stops for Brandon, with Jase Wareham turning aside 40 shots for Yellowhead.
On Friday at the Shoal Lake Communiplex, Chase Cochrane scored in the 15th round of the shootout as Yellowhead beat Brandon 3-2.
Rylan Gage and Nathan Maynes also scored in the shootout for Yellowhead, with Brady Turko and Ekam Dhaliwal sniping for Brandon.
In the actual game itself, Dhaliwal and Cole Temple gave Brandon a 2-0 lead in the first period but Max Collyer and DJ Meloney tied it in the last 10 minutes of the third period.
Casey Berry made 21 saves during the game and 12 in the shootout for Brandon, with Jase Wareham turning aside 49 shots during the game and 13 in the shootout for Yellowhead.
Incredibly, six of Brandon’s previous seven games had been decided in overtime or a shootout. The Wheat Kings finish up against the Southwest Cougars at Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex on Wednesday at 8 p.m. There are four games that night, and then the entire league is off until play resumes on Jan. 6
Brandon next sees action after Christmas on Jan. 6 when the Winnipeg Bruins visit, and they also host the Winnipeg Wild for two games that weekend.
The Chiefs host Parkland at the Shoal Lake Communiplex on Tuesday at 8 p.m., and return from the holiday break on Jan. 7 and 8 when they visit the Kenora Thistles.
SOUTHWEST COUGARS
PARKLAND RANGERS
In their only action of the weekend for both clubs, the seventh-place Cougars (12-12-4) beat the 11th-place Rangers (6-18-3) on Sunday afternoon at the Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex.
The Cougars broke open a close game by scoring five goals in the third period in an 8-2 victory.
Luke MacKenzie had a hat trick, Nicholas Cullen and Dawson Andries each scored twice and Ty Schell added a single. Hayden Seib had both goals for Parkland, which was tied 1-1 after the first period and trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes.
Micky Gross made 18 saves for Southwest, with Kyler Swanton stopping 26 shots for Parkland.
Southwest hosts Brandon on Wednesday, and the Cougars return to action after Christmas on Jan. 7 and 8 when the Interlake Lightning visit for a pair of games. Parkland visits Yellowhead on Tuesday, and to start the second half, they host the Winnipeg Bruins for two games at the Swan River Centennial Arena on Jan. 7 and 8.
GIRLS
WESTMAN WILDCATS
The second-place Wildcats (13-4-0) cruised to a pair of dominant victories against the eighth-place Central Plains Capitals (3-14-0) on Saturday and the fifth-place Eastman Selects (7-9-1) on Sunday in the Manitoba Female Hockey League U18 AAA at the Hartney Community Rink.
On Sunday, Paige Kozak and Kelsey Huibers each scored twice with singles coming off the sticks of Callie Hilhorst and Brooklyn Franklin as the Wildcats cruised to a 6-0 victory over the Selects.
Grace Glover made 31 saves for the shutout victory for Westman.
On Saturday, Hayley Kolosky had a hat trick, Kozak sniped twice and Billie Baranyk had a shorthanded goal as Westman topped Central Plains 6-1.
Payton Murray made 17 saves for the win.
Westman and Yellowhead collide for one last time before Christmas in Hartney on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
After the break, the Wildcats have a pair of home games, against the Pembina Valley Hawks on Jan. 6 and the Winnipeg Ice on Jan. 7.
YELLOWHEAD CHIEFS
The Chiefs (11-5-1) moved into a tie for third place with the Winnipeg Avros (11-4-1) as they swept a pair of home games at the Shoal Lake Communiplex against Eastman on Saturday and Central Plains on Sunday.
On Sunday, Mia McGregor fired a hat trick, Dara Thompson sniped twice and Hannah Reagh and Kennedy Wood also found the back of the net as the Chiefs beat the Capitals 7-2.
Clair Merckx earned the victory in net for Yellowhead.
On Saturday, Kirby Gray, Trynity Turner, Reagh and Wood all scored for Yellowhead in a 4-3 victory over Eastman. Natalie Rampton made 22 saves for the victory.
After the Christmas break, Yellowhead begins part two of their season on Jan. 7 when Pembina Valley visits and the next day when the Winnipeg Ice head to Shoal Lake.
