WASAGAMING — Like a game of musical chairs that comes down to two people, Dale Murray found himself in the right spot at the critical time.
His rollercoaster match with Jack McDiarmid saw five lead changes, the last when the Gilbert Plains native won the 16th and 17th holes to eke out a 1-up victory in the Tamarack golf tournament masters men’s final at Clear Lake Golf Course on Saturday.
“Just hung in there, we were just back and forth. I’d make a mistake, he’d capitalize and vice versa. We just kept battling,” Murray said, adding McDiarmid was a terrific opponent.
“I’ve read the book and his name is all over it. He’s won the regular men’s … many times and he’s just a great guy to golf with.”
Murray, 63, moved up to the 55-and-up division for the first time after playing in the men’s championship flight on his most recent Tamarack trip in 2020. He led after Day 1 of qualifying at 2-over 74 and wasn’t pleased with his second round, a 79 that dropped him to the No. 4 seed. But he downed past champions Keith Fawcett and Darren Graves convincingly to reach the final.
He made the turn 2 down but made a “huge” birdie on the tough 10th hole and tied it on 11. After he retook the lead on 17, he striped his tee ball on 18 in front of a massive gallery watching the men’s final, then knocked his wedge shot safely onto the green after the four-time Tamarack men’s champion sliced his tee ball into the right trees.
“That wedge, I was feeling it,” Murray said. “It was unfortunate Jack went into the trees on the right but I still had to get it on the green.
“These guys are good, I knew they were good but I didn’t know they were that good. They know the course and it’s nice to watch.
“… It feels great.”
PANAGIOTOU TAKES SENIOR TITLE
George Panagiotou watched his shot at a Tamarack senior crown slip away last year as Glen Parker finally won in his third straight final.
He learned and came back strong, staving off a surging Clay Wyborn for a 2-and-1 triumph.
“I was more grounded. I didn’t get too riled up,” Panagiotou said. “I was trying to play the course more than play the player. It does settle the nerves better when you’ve played it before.”
Panagiotou was 3 up after six holes before Wyborn took three straight from 12 to 14 to knot it up. Panagiotou made a solid par on the tough 15th and won with a par on 17 to avoid a nervy finishing hole.
“It’s a big relief,” Panagiotou said. “It’s an awesome feeling.”
