WASAGAMING — One bad swing in qualifying might have been the best thing for Hayden Delaloye.

He was 4-under par with five holes to go at the Tamarack golf tournament on Monday when he lost a ball with his driver and reloaded with a five-iron, crushing it down the middle.

“I should have just done that the first time,” he mumbled, and put that plan into action all week.

Delaloye knocked it around Clear Lake Golf Course better than any junior and defeated Mack Sanderson 4 and 2 in Saturday’s final.

“Feels great,” Delaloye said. “Last year wasn’t the greatest tournament but I bounced back and it feels really good.”

Delaloye missed the championship flight in 2021 but took the top seed with a 71, the only sub-par round in the field. He made quick work of Payton Bateman in the quarterfinals and got past Jaxon Jacobson to reach the final.

Sanderson beat Cameron McDonald 2 and 1, then rattled off eight birdies in 16 holes, including five in a row to close out Jeri-Ann Lafleche 4 and 2.

The final was close until the Neepawa native broke it open with four straight holes to start the back nine.

They were both 1 under through nine and knotted up when Sanderson misfired on a few key shots to fall 4 down.

He made a tough par save on 14 to keep the match alive and extended it with a par to win the 15th, but Delaloye smashed his five-iron more than 250 yards to 20 feet on the par-4 16th to ice it.

“I got off to a really bad start on the back nine and it’s hard to recover from,” Sanderson said. “I definitely gave it my all but we’ll take it. He careered.”

TROOP, REIMER DOMINATE SCRAMBLE

Kaitlin Troop simply doesn’t lose anymore.

The eight-time Tamarack women’s champion teamed up with Julia Reimer and blew the women’s scramble field away.

They beat Cathy Bowd and Rhonda Williams, then needed just 12 holes to eliminate Leslie Olson and Tracy Rutledge to earn a matchup against Troop’s mother and aunt, Jayne Troop and Jody Bieber.

The veterans cut an early lead to one through seven holes but didn’t see the 15th.

It might be time to answer a question that comes up with increased frequency year after year. Since the women’s singles event is gone and Lafleche just reached the championship flight semifinals against the boys, how would Kaitlin Troop fare against the men?
