• 40 YEARS AGO — Centre Dean Sexsmith of the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings was selected by the New York Islanders in the fifth round of the 1986 National Hockey League entry draft.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Tom Cook crunched a three-run homer to lead the Binscarth Buzzards to a 16-8 triumph over the Grandview Lakers in Yellowhead Baseball League action. Herb Andres stroked a two-run dinger for the Lakers. Braden Boucher earned the win, while Brook Andres took the loss.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Rodi Sveistrup drove in four runs to lead the Century 21 Sox to a 14-8 victory over the Applebee’s Expos in the MacArthur Senior AA Baseball League. Sveistrup went 2-for-4 with a double. Sox teammate Jeff Cassan went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring a run and driving in another.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Dale Penner and Ben Van Walleghem each had three hits as the Cubs topped the Rivers Comets 9-6 in the Andrew Agencies Senior AA Baseball League. Winning pitcher Keith Van Walleghem went all seven innings, surrendering six earned runs on 12 hits and two walks.
