IN LOCAL HISTORY
• 60 YEARS AGO — Matt Hrabarchuk battled the forces of nature to win the 27-hole championship flight in the City and District golf tournament at the Brandon Golf and Country Club with a neat 114 total.
• 50 YEARS AGO — Cathy Parham tossed a three-hitter, while three of her teammates — Karen Anderson, Joan Boyer and Nina Denbow — managed three hits apiece as Souris clobbered UCT 20-0 in a Brandon and District Ladies’ Fastball League game.
• 40 YEARS AGO — Mike Fahilly and Daun Snyder of Brandon have been named to Manitoba’s track and field team for the 1985 Canada Summer Games in Saint John, N.B. Fehilly will compete in the 400-metre hurdles and the 4×100 relay. Snyder will throw the javelin.
• 30 YEARS AGO — Paul Usunier tossed a four-hitter to lead the Simplot Pirates to a 7-4 triumph over Moxie’s in the Brandon Intermediate Baseball League.
• 20 YEARS AGO — Drive for show, putt for dough? Wrongo. At least, not for Ken Cruickshank. The 55-year-old Brandonite had a better plan at the Manitoba Highways annual scramble golf tournament a couple of weeks ago. Drive for dough, putt for show. That was Cruickshank’s mantra at Killarney Lakeside when he jugged his tee shot on the seventh hole and won $10,000 in a hole-in- one contest.
• 10 YEARS AGO — Ryan Pilon’s moment is finally about to arrive. The 18-year-old Brandon Wheat Kings defenceman is expected to go in the top few rounds of the National Hockey League draft. Pilon flew down to Florida on Tuesday for the annual event, which begins with the first round this evening.
