IN LOCAL HISTORY

60 YEARS AGO — Vailla Hoggan and Doug Ross of the Vincent Massey Vikings won the City Senior High School Basketball League scoring crowns for the past season. Hoggan averaged 14.2 per game while Ross hit the strings for 13.2 per game.

50 YEARS AGO — The Brandon Wheat Kings were eliminated from the WCHL playoffs with a 6-3 loss to the Saskatoon Blades. For eight Wheaties, it was their final game of junior hockey. Besides Dale Anderson, who broke a bone in his arm earlier, those leaving were Rick Blight, Dale McMullin, Derek Spring, Mike Bradbury, Rick Piche, Darry Stevens and Doug Murray.

40 YEARS AGO — Hartney Elks defeated host Brandon Crane Rentals 9-7 in a shootout at the Sportsplex to win a peewee hockey tournament. Wade Sambrook had four goals while Curtis Greive and Jeff Arnold both scored twice for the winners.

20 YEARS AGO — Brandon Wheat Kings right-winger Eric Fehr and Kootenay Ice left-winger Nigel Dawes are the finalists for the Western Hockey League’s player of the year award. In what will be an all-Manitoba ballott, WHL general managers, coaches and media will choose between the league’s only two 50-goal scorers this season.

10 YEARS AGO — The Assiniboine Community College Cougars women’s hockey team was a couple of goals from a Western Shield Senior B championship last spring. With two-thirds of last year’s roster no longer on the team Cougars head coach Terry Arksey is hopeful that the team can find a way to finish the job and become western Canadian champions.
