Brandon police arrested a man on Sunday for allegedly lighting several fires in a bush near the Assiniboine River.

The Brandon Police Service received a report that a man was lighting fires in a bush near the entrance to Dyke Road, which is an unpaved road that runs parallel to the river.

Bylaw and BPS officers went to the area and found a man who matched the caller’s description of the suspect, BPS said in a news release.

Witnesses saw the man light at least six fires, and Brandon Fire and Emergency Services responded to put out “the grass fire,” BPS said.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old man, and police said he admitted to starting the fire.

Police charged him with arson causing damage to property and released him on an undertaking. He is scheduled to appear in court in August.

Cash and cocaine

Brandon police arrested two men on Monday during a traffic stop that led to the seizure of cash and cocaine.

Officers with the Brandon Police Service pulled over a vehicle in the 200 block of 10th Street and found an 18-year-old man inside who had a warrant out for his arrest on several charges, including assault, carrying a concealed weapon and assaulting a police officer, BPS said in a news release.

Police also found a fanny pack with around $1,600 in cash, four grams of cocaine packaged in single-gram bags, packaging materials and a digital scale, BPS said.

BPS arrested the teen, along with a 20-year-old man who was also in the vehicle.

Police charged both men with possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possessing property obtained by crime.

They were held in BPS detention cells overnight and scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

Robbery with violence

A man accused of robbing a Brandon business was arrested on Monday.

The Brandon Police Service received a report of a robbery at a business on the 500 block of First Street at around 3 p.m.

The suspect punched an employee in the shoulder and grabbed the cash till before leaving, BPS said in a news release.

Police said the suspect had also threatened staff at a business on the 1000 block of 18th Street and fled in a taxi earlier in the day.

Officers identified the suspect as a 45-year-old man and arrested him when he was dropped off in a residential area near Pacific Avenue, police said.

BPS charged the man with robbery with violence and uttering threats. He was held in BPS detention cells overnight and scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
