The Winnipeg Wesmen did what the Brandon Bobcats do best to snap their seven-game win streak.

Shawn Maranan dropped 25 points as the Wesmen scored their season-high in a 108-99 win in Canada West men’s basketball action at the Duckworth Centre on Thursday night.

The Bobcats (7-2), who lead the country in scoring, wanted a track meet. The Wesmen (5-2) said “Careful what you wish for,” as Maranan dropped 11 first-quarter points and the hosts led 34-16 after 10 minutes.

Down 39-20, Anthony Tsegakele and Eli Ampofo pushed BU on a quick 8-0 run but the Wesmen snapped it fast and maintained a 60-46 lead at halftime. It was, by far, the most points BU has allowed in a half.

BU flipped the switch a quarter earlier than it did on Saturday when it erased a 19-point deficit in the fourth to beat Saskatchewan.

The tide turned as Brandon’s full-court press defence came alive, forcing five turnovers in the third.

The Bobcats cut it to single-digits on a Jahmaal Gardner three, then Jack McDonald hit back-to-back buckets in the paint to make it 72-69 Wesmen.

Winnipeg’s veteran big man Donald Stewart answered with seven straight points in the last three minutes of the frame. Sultan Bhatti hit a three-pointer to make it 79-72 Winnipeg with 10 minutes to go.

Tsegakele hit a layup, three and a three-point play to bring it to 83-80, but Stewart answered with an easy one inside, then a triple to restore an eight-point edge.

Bobcats coach Gil Cheung took a technical foul after Khari Ojeda-Harvey took a foul down 93-84 with 3:22 remaining.

The next three minutes were a total frenzy and while Brandon got to the rim and scored quickly, Winnipeg stayed calm and beat furious full-court pressure to keep pace and steal the win.

Stewart scored 20 points for Winnipeg while Tsegakele had a game-high 26 and Gardner added 21 for Brandon.

The Wesmen won the rebounding battle 48-34 and scored 23 second-chance points to the Bobcats’ nine.

The teams meet again on Saturday at the Healthy Living Centre at 7 p.m.
