The chamber music festival continues at Brandon University’s Lorne Watson Recital Hall with a performance by duo pianists Madeline Hildebrand and Everett Hopfner tonight, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Brandon Sun editor Matt Goerzen managed to catch up with the piano duo on Monday afternoon as they put in some practice time at the hall, playing La Valse by Maurice Ravel, and ironing out their upcoming performance.

Renowned Canadian tenor James McLennan will also be performing Wednesday evening (accompanied by pianist Laura Loewen and guest vocalist Lara Ciekiewitz).

Ever since Canadian actor Michael Cera started hanging around the Toronto Blue Jays’ clubhouse, and inviting players and management over to his house to see his man-cave shrine to the Blue Jays, Canada’s only Major League Baseball team has stunk.

Toronto went all the way to Game 7 of the World Series last year and was a pre-season favourite to repeat as American League champions, but then Cera, a Blue Jays’ superfan, started interfering.

Why can’t Cera just sit in the stands at Rogers Stadium, sip his Labatt Blue or a $23 latte and leave the Jays alone? But no, he has to interrupt the Blue Jays mojo by hanging around the clubhouse, having rookie third baseman Kazuma Okamoto say hello to Cera’s mother on a telephone FaceTime chat when the Japanese free-agent signee should be out in the batting cage working on his swing. Okamoto is closing in on 25 home runs, but his batting average in the .230 range would probably be .250 or better if he wasn’t being bothered by Cera.

Then there’s George Springer, one of the team’s biggest disappointments this year. Last year, Springer belted 32 home runs and averaged .309 and, alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr., led the offence for the A.L. champs. This year, with Cera bragging to Springer about setting a viewership record on the livestream (11, when the old record was two. … hahahaha!), Springer is batting around .230 and won’t come close to even half of last year’s home run total. That’s Cera’s fault, because he took valuable time away from Springer’s workout program and batting practice regimen.

WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s health minister defended the government’s contract with Dynacare, saying the for-profit company is expected to treat its workers fairly — but wouldn’t say if that expectation was spelled out in the deal.

The 350 private lab workers, who are represented by the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals, have been without a contract since March 31 and went on strike on Sept. 8.

The Manitoba Labour Board ordered them back to work and they returned to the job one day later.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara was asked Wednesday about the lack of an essential services agreement and why the government didn’t intervene in March, knowing that a labour dispute could interrupt community lab services.

Four teens killed in highway crash near Winnipeg Beach

WINNIPEG — Four teens have died in a collision near Winnipeg Beach.

Manitoba RCMP are investigating the two-vehicle crash, which happened at about 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.

A vehicle travelling west on Highway 229 was struck while crossing Highway 8, RCMP said in a news release Monday.

Everyone inside the westbound vehicle died at the scene, including the driver, an 18-year-old female from Winnipeg, and three passengers: an 18-year-old male from Gimli, an 18-year-old female from Sandy Hook and a 17-year-old male from Ear Falls, Ont.
